Installing Logic Pro library directly on an external drive - - Apple Footer

Could work indeed. Justin is a senior editor covering all things music for 9to5Mac, including our weekly Logic Pros series exploring music production on Mac and iOS devices. This was installed directly onto the system hard drive. Yes, hard to understand the "motivation", if any. Justin Kahn. Fine but it will take ages. Doesn't seem to be.

Move Logic Pro Sound Library: Relocate to external drive - 9to5Mac.Move Logic Pro Sound Library: Relocate to external drive - 9to5Mac

Today we are taking a look at how to relocate the Logic Pro Sound Library and keep all of the new content organized. For professionals with massive external sound and sample libraries, moving the Logic Sound Library to a drive of choice is a must, but it can also be quite handy for just about anyone with limited internal storage. And there is one thing to quickly point out here for new users before we move on as well. Thereafter, you can move just the lighter Essential Content aspect of the entire Sound Library to a custom-selected external drive or storage location.

And whether you updated to Logic Pro X Relocating the Sound Library moves it for both apps. Apple Loops, Impulse Responses, and third-party content is not included when moving or relocating the sounds.

From here, we can see an itemized list of the included content packs that make up the Logic Pro Sound Library.

Simply click the checkboxes of the packs you want to download and hit install. Although these days it does seems like better performance and lesser capacity for a more concentrated library of sound content is the way to go for us. Last edited by Elevteros; 27th October at AM..

Sascha Franck. I have not tried installing the library elsewhere and probably won't, my startup drive is large enough to hold it for a while to come , but I think you can just set up a new location with the bare minimum content loaded which is what Logic will install at the first download , then set another location.

When you then continue your library download, it'll automatically use that new location for the additional content. Thank you very much Sascha! I'll try it. Could work indeed. A pain Well I started the download and frankly it is quite a pain you know where!

I was able to download the essential files, relocate them onto an external drive. After that you have to download content bit by bit if your main drive is a small SDD otherwise you get a message "your drive is too small, please trash unecessary files, clean up the drive etc Fine but it will take ages.

Moreover the Apple loops and impulse files are not relocatable it seems. Why on earth didn't Apple just let us decide where we want all files located? This is crazy for such a sophisticated DAW. Yes, hard to understand the "motivation", if any. I must say when I had to abandon Logic I switched to Ableton Live which has none of those circumvoluted fiddles. You just put your files wherever you want, have Live locating them once and you are done!

That said, thank you very much for the tips and comments. Last edited by Elevteros; 31st October at AM.. Just got crazier - that's it Logic, I've had it!

Well here I am i the studio to continue downloading content, starting with about 1. Absolute madness, or is there a work around? Doesn't seem to be. Last edited by Elevteros; 31st October at PM.. Thank you! Make sure to click Allow when Logic Pro asks for permission to access an external drive. You can't share a Sound Library between Mac computers. Don't rename the external drive after you've moved your library.

If you get an error that says content can't be relocated, give Logic Pro access to your external drive. After you've moved the Sound Library to an external drive, you might want to move it back to your Mac.

For example, you might have a performance and you don't want to bring an external drive. To install all content, click Select All Uninstalled, then click Install. If you open Logic Pro or MainStage without the external drive containing the Sound Library, you can choose what you want to do.
